A major goal of the Allen Institute for Brain Science is to catalog and describe the many cell types found in the brain. The Synaptic Physiology project advances this goal by examining the synaptic connectivity between neuronal subclasses in human and mouse cortex. We have generated data from thousands of human and mouse synapses using in vitro simultaneous patch clamp recordings. These recordings are used to describe the connection probability, strength, kinetics, and short-term plasticity of synapses in the context of the major cortical cell subclasses. The data from this project are available for public use

The main purposes of this documentation are to (1) describe the structure and contents of the synaptic physiology dataset, and (2) to describe the tools and API used to access and analyze the dataset. We’ve included tools and information that audiences with different levels of programming expertise. Look to the Interactive Tools for graphical interfaces that will help you nagivate and explore the data, but with limited custom analysis. For those who want to dig into the data deeper and are familiar with database queries, see our API Reference on how best to get started.
